ChatBrief ("we", "our", or "the app") is a WhatsApp chat summarization tool that helps you digest group and personal conversations quickly. This Privacy Policy explains what data we access, how it is used, and your rights as a user.

1. Data We Access

WhatsApp chat exports: You manually export chats from WhatsApp and share them with ChatBrief. The app reads the text content of these exports solely to generate a summary. Chat content is never stored permanently on our servers.
API keys: If you choose to use your own AI provider key (Google Gemini or Groq), that key is stored locally on your device using Android's encrypted DataStore. It is never transmitted to our servers.
App preferences and summaries: Settings (such as selected groups, filters, and summarization history) are stored locally on your device using Room database and DataStore. This data does not leave your device.

2. Data Sent to Third-Party AI Services

When you tap "Summarize", the selected chat messages are sent to one of the following AI services to generate a summary:

Google Gemini API – operated by Google LLC. Subject to Google's Privacy Policy and Gemini API Terms.
Groq API – operated by Groq, Inc. Subject to Groq's Privacy Policy.

We do not control how these providers process data once received. We recommend reviewing their respective policies. Chat content is sent only at the moment of summarization and is not stored by us after the API call completes.

3. Analytics and Crash Reporting

We use the following Firebase services (operated by Google LLC) to improve app stability and understand usage patterns:

Firebase Crashlytics: Automatically collects crash reports including device model, OS version, and stack traces. No personally identifiable information or chat content is included in crash reports.
Firebase Analytics: Collects anonymized usage events (e.g., screens viewed, features used). No chat content is included.

These services are subject to Google's Privacy Policy.

4. Backend Infrastructure

ChatBrief uses Supabase for backend services (account management and app health monitoring). Supabase is subject to its own Privacy Policy. We do not store your chat content on Supabase.

5. Data We Do Not Collect

We do not collect your name, phone number, or WhatsApp account details.
We do not store your chat messages on our servers.
We do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers or data brokers.
We do not use your data to train AI models.

6. Data Retention

Summaries and preferences are stored locally on your device and remain under your control. You can clear all app data at any time via Android Settings → Apps → ChatBrief → Clear Data. We do not retain your chat content beyond the duration of a single summarization request.

7. Children's Privacy

ChatBrief is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.

8. Security

API keys are stored using Android's encrypted DataStore. Summaries are stored in a SQLCipher-encrypted local database. We apply reasonable technical measures to protect your data, though no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
